Symi is part of the Dodecanese Island chain, located about 20 nautical miles north-northwest of Rhodes. The island has 2,580 inhabitants, mainly working in tourism, fishing, and trade. Its main town, on the northeast coast, is also named Symi and consists of the lower town around the port, also referred to as Gialos – famous for its colorful neoclassical buildings, and the upper town, which is called Horio or Ano Symi. Other inhabited villages are Pedi, Nimborio, Marathounda and Panormitis, one of the most visited places around the island. The village of Panormitis hosts a beautiful monastery dedicated to the Archangel Michael and is thought to be one of the most important attractions of the Dodecanese, visited by people all over the world. Most beaches on the island also have little churches overlooking them, and are only accessible by sea, so sailing is the best way to explore their beauty. Make sure not to miss Aghios Georgios beach, with green waters and breathtaking, 300-meter-high cliffs!
