Nisyros is a small island located near the larger islands of Kos and Tilos, with a population of around 1.000 people.
One of the most notable features of Nisyros is its active volcano, which is located in the center of the island. The volcano last erupted in 1888 and is closely monitored for potential activity.However, visitors can take a guided tour of the 4.000-5.000 year-old volcano’s crater, Stephanos, and learn about the island’s rich geological history. Right above, Nikia village offers magnificent views of the crater, and a unique volcanological museum – actually the only one in Greece!
Aside from its natural beauty, Nisyros has a very interesting cultural heritage. The island’s capital, Mandraki, is a charming village with traditional white-washed houses and narrow streets. It also has a medieval castle and several churches and monasteries, including the 15th-century Monastery of Panagia Spiliani. Nisyros is home to several ancient ruins, including the ruins of a Byzantine castle and a Hellenistic acropolis.
One of the highlights of the island are the natural hot baths located 1.5km from Mandraki. Built in the 19th century and renovated recently, the thermal spa is a relaxing experience that can aid in the treatment of various ailments, with its healing waters reaching up to 46°C.
