Alimia is an islet right next to Rhodes, covering a total area of 7.4 square kilometers. The island had a small population until the period of the Second World War but in recent decades it has remained uninhabited.
With a rich history, Alimia was inhabited since the Neolithic era and later colonized by the ancient Greeks. During the Byzantine period, it became a significant center for monasticism. In the Middle Ages, the island was under the rule of the Knights Hospitaller who erected a castle on it to safeguard against pirates and other dangers.
Nowadays, Alimia is a peaceful and idyllic place, renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty, clear waters, and stunning beaches. Although it’s a popular destination for day trips and boat excursions from Rhodes and Halki, the island itself has hardly any tourism infrastructure.
